Absorption and Recoil of Fundamental String by D-String

    Get PDF
Inclusive absorption cross section of fundamental IIB string to D-string is calculated perturbatively. The leading order result agrees with estimate based on stringy Higgs mechanism via Cremmer-Scherk coupling. It is argued that the subleading order correction is dominated by purely planar diagrams in the large mass limit. The correction represents conversion of binding energy into local recoil process of the fundamental string and D-string bound state. We show their presence explicitly in the next leading order.Comment: harvmac, 4 figures, 17 page

Effective Action for Non-Geometric Fluxes from Duality Covariant Actions

The (heterotic) double field theories and the exceptional field theories are recently developed for manifestly duality covariant formulation of various supergravity theories, describing low-energy limit of various (heterotic) superstring and M-theory compactifications. These field theories are known to be reduced to the standard descriptions by introducing appropriately parameterized generalized metric and by applying suitably chosen section conditions. We generalize this development to non-geometric backgrounds by utilizing dual fields pertinent to non-geometric fluxes. We introduce different parameterizations for the generalized metric, in terms of the conventional supergravity fields or the dual fields. Under certain simplifying assumptions, we construct new effective action for non-geometric backgrounds. We then obtain the non-geometric backgrounds sourced by exotic branes. From them, we construct their UU-duality monodromy matrices. The charge of exotic branes obtained from these monodromy matrices agrees perfectly with the charge obtained from the non-geometric flux integral.Comment: cover + 101 pages; v2. published version in JHE

Analysing policy variation in local government : an empirical study of social policies in Korean local government

This thesis explores policy variation in local government. 'Me main purpose of the research is twofold; to examine the methodological issues in the analysis of policy variation in local government; and to further our understanding of Korean local government, which has been undergoing sweeping changes in recent years. In the first half of this thesis the distinction between output and process approaches is examined and reformulated in theoretical and methodological terms. Output studies are reclassified into four modes of explanation: socioeconomic analysis, political studies, urban hierarchy theory and incrementalism. A general model based on British literature is established for a process approach consisting of three dimensions: political leadership, administrative process and social inputs. The second half of the study examines local social policy-making in Korea with the aim of assessing the working of the newly-launched Korean local government system. A two-stage method is developed in the research design. In the first stage, an output analysis is carried out in order to identify how the outputs of local social policies vary and to what extent this variation is related to policy environments. In the second stage, the dynamics of the policy process are explored using a case study approach. This shows HOW political factors are associated with policy variation in local government. This study indicates in theory how the research question itself has predetermined not only the methods but also the findings of empirical studies. In the methodological dimension, six differences are noted between the output and process approaches. This study concludes by calling for more attention to innovation in the management side of Korean local government

A String Theory Which Isn't About Strings

Quantization of closed string proceeds with a suitable choice of worldsheet vacuum. A priori, the vacuum may be chosen independently for left-moving and right-moving sectors. We construct {\sl ab initio} quantized bosonic string theory with left-right asymmetric worldsheet vacuum and explore its consequences and implications. We critically examine the validity of new vacuum and carry out first-quantization using standard operator formalism. Remarkably, the string spectrum consists only of a finite number of degrees of freedom: string gravity (massless spin-two, Kalb-Ramond and dilaton fields) and two massive spin-two Fierz-Pauli fields. The massive spin-two fields have negative norm, opposite mass-squared, and provides a Lee-Wick type extension of string gravity. We compute two physical observables: tree-level scattering amplitudes and one-loop cosmological constant. Scattering amplitude of four dilatons is shown to be a rational function of kinematic invariants, and in D=26D=26 factorizes into contributions of massless spin-two and a pair of massive spin-two fields. The string one loop partition function is shown to perfectly agree with one loop Feynman diagram of string gravity and two massive spin-two fields. In particular, it does not exhibit modular invariance. We critically compare our construction with recent studies and contrast differences.Comment: 42 pages, 1 figure, minor corrections, references added; v3: minor corrections, references added, published version in JHE

Thermoelectric effect in the Kondo dot side-coupled to a Majorana fermion

We investigate the linear thermoelectric response of an interacting quantum dot side-coupled by one of two Majorana fermions (MFs) formed at the ends of a topological superconducting wire. We employ the numerical renormalization group technique to obtain the thermoelectrical conductance LL as well as the electrical conductance GG when the background temperature TT and the dot gate are tuned. We distinguish two transport regimes in which LL displays different features: the weak- (ΓmTK)(\Gamma_{m} T_{K}) regimes, where Γm\Gamma_{m} and TKT_{K} are the Majorana-dot coupling and the Kondo temperature, respectively. For an ideal (infinitely long) nanowire where the Majorana end states do not overlap (ϵm=0)(\epsilon_{m} = 0), the thermoelectrical conductance LL in the weak-coupling regime exhibits a peak at T∼ΓmT \sim \Gamma_{m}. This peak is ascribed to the anti-Fano resonance between the asymmetric Kondo resonance and the zero-energy MF mode. Interestingly, in the strong-coupling regime, the Kondo-induced peak in LL is shifted due to the MF-induced Zeeman splitting in the dot. For finite but small ϵm>0\epsilon_{m} > 0, the interference between two MFs restores the Kondo effect in the dot in a smaller energy scale Γm′\Gamma^{\prime}_{m} and gives rise to an additional peak in LL at T∼Γm′T \sim \Gamma^{\prime}_{m}, whose sign is opposite to that at T∼ΓmT\sim\Gamma_{m}. In the strong-coupling regime this additional peak can cause a non-monotonic behavior of LL with respect to the dot gate. Finally, we examine the case in which an ordinary spin-polarized fermion is coupled to the dot and identify the fingerprint of MFs by comparing two cases.Comment: 10 pages, 8 figure
